Desperate times mean desperate measures.
Hi, everyone. Angus Pryor here, multi-award-winning practice pro specialist. I’m currently in the Philippines, in a town called Dumaguete, where I have a number of people working for me. Behind me is the spot I’ve just shown you, where there are lots of motorbikes. As you can imagine, in parts of Asia, the level of income is not quite the same. Therefore, the most common and affordable transport is motorbikes, and there are loads of them here — they’re pretty cool.
What I’ve just shown you, which I find really interesting, is that because there’s no social security in a place like this, an enterprising individual decided, “Well, I’ll line up these motorbikes and put cardboard on the seats to stop them from getting too hot.” Even though the sun’s not out at the moment, it’s probably 30 degrees, but it feels like 40.
My point is this: in desperate times, you do desperate things. Sometimes in business, we need to adopt that same spirit. You might think, “Angus, things aren’t going well in my business right now. What’s it going to take?” Here’s someone who’s made a business out of nothing. There’s no safety net here. It’s either you do something, or you don’t get paid, and you don’t eat.
Thankfully, we don’t have that situation in Australia, but sometimes we just need a pinch of that mindset in our businesses. Whatever it takes! Whether it’s putting cardboard on the seats of scooters to keep them from getting too hot. When people come to collect their scooter, they pay a few coins, and this guy gets paid.
I think it’s an important lesson for all of us. See you next time!
