This week on Winning In Business, Angus Pryor the #1 Google-ranked dental marketer in Australia will be sharing with you about how to focus on something else to get something done.
Want something done? Are you stuck on the how? Now, look, I’ve read a couple of books recently, which I’m going to show you in a second, which talk about the struggles that we face sometimes getting things done. And part of the challenge we face is that we’re worried about the how it’s like I know what I want to get done, but how do I get it done.
And both of these books have different ideas about exactly how to overcome that. But both of them are very clear, you don’t want to focus on the house. Now the first book is a book by a guy I heard speak, you might have heard of him. It’s Alan Pease, and Alan and Barbara. And what they say is, if you don’t focus on the how, and the reason is very simple, because when you focus on the how you don’t know how to do it. And so your brain goes, Oh, that’s too hard. I, you know, I’m just going to give up on my idea.
What they suggest instead is that you just leave the what thing and you keep repeating the watch, and that basically the part of your brain called the raise, which is like a filter, it will find the how over time, but if you focus too heavily on the how, then you get depressed and you give up.
The second book that I’m just reading at the moment is called who not how. And it has a similar premise, which is that you don’t focus on the how, but you focus on the who the subtext here is the formula to achieve bigger goals through accelerating teamwork. And the gist here is the same.
Don’t worry about the hammer, but focus on the who like if there’s something that you need to get done, and somebody has ever done it before. And chances are they have, then who is that you can get to help with that. I hope you find that helpful. It’s certainly something that I’m thinking about a lot when I want to get something done. I focus on how to focus on the who, or just focus on the what I don’t know how I’m going to do but I know I’m going to get it done and then let your brain the filter, start to look for answers.
