This week on Winning In Life, Angus Pryor the #1 Google-ranked dental marketer in Australia will be sharing with you why you’re not happier. Here’s a hint, happiness is the way.
Here’s why you’re not happier. In this video we’re going to talk about, here’s why you’re not happier and hang on to the end, because I’ve got a special gift for you. Now, look, I’ve just shown you, we’ve been getting some work done. Apologies, it’s been around a bit of background noise, but you’ll see there, we’ve got two bits of deck going on. There’s the old deck. And then there’s the new deck.
And in many ways, this deck is quite a good metaphor for why you’re not happier. Now, I just picked up a book, I literally just picked it up. But I also just got it for my post office box, called The Gap and The Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy. And if I’m lucky, I’m going to be able to interview Benjamin Hardy. And in two sentences in this book, they’ve captured something that a lot of us struggle with, you’ll see that this is called the high achievers guide to happiness, confidence and success.
I can tell you, many of my clients are healthcare professionals and you are high achievers. And you’re probably thinking, Well, that’s good Angus. But what is the answer? Why am I not happier? Now, I really love this quote from someone I’ve never heard of before. And a name I’m probably going to butcher but here goes from someone called Thich Nhat Hanh that sounds maybe Vietnamese to me. There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. Okay, maybe that doesn’t sound very profound to you. But I know that to be true.
It’s actually the way it’s the journey, that is their happiness. It’s not the actual arrival. And this is a quote from Dan Sullivan. And this is the comment that I wanted to make about the deck. See, you know, the new and the old. The way to measure your progress is backward against where you started, not against your idea, I’m going to say that again. The way to measure your progress is backward, where you started, not backward against where you started, not against your ideal.
Now think about that. As high achievers, and I hope I’m in that category. And I’m sure you are, we go I’m not that happy because I wanted to get to blah, but I didn’t quite make it. And I find that in business, you know, I’ve got numbers in my business I want to hit and I wish we were this big. And I wish we were that big and so on. But I haven’t hit those yet, and so on. I’m unhappy.
But like this deck, if you started here, you know, with the old bit of deck, then look at all the progress you’ve made without additional and that’s the way you get to be happier. So if you want to know why you’re not happy, it’s because you’re focusing on well, in fact, I want the deck to grow out there.
But the reality is to be happy. You got to say, well, this is where I started. This is what I’ve achieved and recognise that growth rather than just focusing always on where you want to be because as John Lee Dumas says, There’s something called the arrival fallacy you never actually arrive. Like that little quote, there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the wave. So there we are.
