How to Attract and Keep the Best Staff in the Industry
Are you worried that staff retention at your practice isn’t great? Maybe the people doing a great job don’t stick around, and—worse—the ones who aren’t performing well do. In this short video, I’ll share something I learned from an interview on my Practice Growth HQ podcast with Matt O’Neill, who runs the number one-ranked workplace in his state. He shared a simple strategy that helped him build a workplace where staff actually want to stay.
Matt explained that poor staff retention can cost multiples of a person’s annual salary. When a great employee leaves, they take intellectual property, relationships, and ideas with them. Their departure can also impact workplace culture, which can affect the entire team. To tackle this, Matt introduced a quarterly staff feedback process. Once a quarter, the leadership team (or just you and your practice manager) goes offsite to review feedback from a short three-question survey sent to staff. The survey asks: (1) What do you appreciate about working here? (2) What would you change? (3) What’s your name? (optional). By consistently reviewing and acting on this feedback, he transformed his workplace culture, leading to better staff retention and higher performance.
I’ve actually got one of these offsite meetings scheduled next month, and I’ll be implementing this approach with my team. Will we end up ranked as the best place to work? Who knows. But even small improvements in workplace culture can have huge business benefits. If you want to keep your best staff around, it’s worth giving this a go. See you next time!
