Are you leading or are you managing?

Hi everyone, Angus Pryor here multi award winning practice growth specialist. It’s quite early on here in the Philippines, there’s a man out there on his boat, lots of crabs. Can you see this? See this man here, it’s only five o’clock local time. And the sun is just coming up. And I over my shoulder here. There is where we had an event last night at the conference that I’ve been at. I mean, in many ways, it was bonkers. You know, that was all laid out on a beach they had, we had probably 2 or 300 people there, there was a band. They had fireworks at the end. Yeah, it was a great event. But as I’m walking down here at five o’clock in the morning, you probably can’t see but there are a bunch of staff and I’m walking through this is a Shangri-La Hotel, beautiful hotel, by the way.

The moon’s still there before the sun comes up. And there are staff everywhere getting things ready for a new day. The question is, you know, for us in business, this distinction between management and leadership and how that causes you to better do great work in your business. You know, the best definition I’ve heard says that leadership is doing the right things. Management is doing things, right. And what I would say is, there’s been a whole bunch of leadership here, too, to create this incredible experience the Shangri-La, and they would practically employ a suburb of people, like hundreds and hundreds of people would be employed here. It’s that leadership that says, let’s make sure we’re doing the right things. And then it’s the management that says let’s do things right, which is why when I’m walking down here, at five o’clock in the morning, as the sun’s come out, there are staff everywhere getting prepared for the next day. So, it’s a very simple question for you and your business. How much time you’re spending in management, how much time you’re spending in leadership. Is it making sure that your team is doing the right things or doing things right. See you next time.
