Do you need it kick? Hi everyone, Angus Pryor here, number one Google-ranked dental marketer in Australia and practice growth specialist bringing you Winning In Life, the weekly show designed to help you win at all things in life. Now look, I wanted to talk to you about a book that I’ve recently read. And it just got me to thinking about this concept of whether you need a kick.
So this is a relatively old book, it’s called After Ansett. And for those of you with good memories, you may recall it and it was an airline in Australia for many years, it was pretty much Quantas and Ansett. Or TAA, if you want to go back a long way. So they’re really basically two airlines in Australia.
And what happened is after 911 and Ansett died, and with it, I think 10s of 1000s of employees. And what’s significant about this book, this is written by the, she was the what did she call herself, she was like the HR manager. So when a whole bunch of people got retrenched. It was this person’s job Helena Steel to work with the people to help them out and so on. There’s big retrenchments. But what this book is, is, among other things, there are 35 accounts of people a number of years down the track.
So these are people who are retrenched by Ansett, they work there quite a long time. And then they sort of reconnect with it with them down the track. And they looked at what happened and this is the part that I found so fascinating. 35 people and I would say at least half of them said, words the effect of you know, it was kind of like what was the lessons learned from you know, being retrenched and in life after and at least half of them said, you know, it was really that kick, it was really that push that got me to actually do something that I didn’t know I could do.
And so, I hope for you watching this that you are not thinking, Well, you know, I need to wait to be rich, redundant or retrenched to get that kick to do whatever the next thing is, and as I say many of the people, I said I didn’t realise I had the skills. I didn’t realise I could go for that. But it was only because of that kick by being pushed, and have answered that they did it anyway.
I just thought that’s food for thought, like, why should we wait to be retrenched from our job? Why should we wait to have the business go broke to sort of take that next step? And so hence my question today, do you need a kick? Alright, now look a little freebie for you.
