Tech Is Taking Over Like It or Not
I recently attended a dental conference in the US and had the chance to experience firsthand how the industry is evolving. If there’s one thing that stood out at the Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting, it’s that technology is marching forward fast. Some of the innovations were so impressive that even after three days of exploring, there were still booths I hadn’t seen.
One of the big talking points? AI in dentistry. There were multiple booths showing AI-powered X-ray analysis, giving us a glimpse of a future where AI helps improve accuracy and consistency in diagnosis.
Then there’s communication tech. More and more practices are switching to VoIP systems that integrate with Google Analytics, meaning when a patient calls, their records pop up instantly. It’s all about making life easier for both patients and practices. And while tech can sometimes feel overwhelming, those who embrace it will set themselves apart.
I also discussed these insights in detail on my podcast, Practice Growth HQ. If you’re interested in how these changes could impact your practice, check it out for a closer look.
Fewer Referrals Means Happier Patients
One of the biggest shifts happening, especially in the US, is the push to minimise patient referrals. Large DSOs are keeping treatments in-house by expanding their skill sets, and it’s something solo dentists should consider too.
Now, I get it. Some treatments need a specialist. But there are probably simple cases you’re referring out right now that you could handle with the right training. And the benefits? Happier patients who don’t have to go elsewhere, plus a practice that feels more complete.
Want More Patients? Time to Market Yourself
If you think Aussie dentists are marketing hard, the US takes it up a notch. Practices over there are advertising in cafes, supermarkets, and sponsoring local events. They’re not afraid to get their name out beyond their practice walls.
This kind of marketing isn’t just for high-competition areas anymore. It’s becoming the norm. What do you want to be known for? Make sure your marketing actually reflects that, whether it’s online, in print, or in the community. A little bit of creativity goes a long way.
Final Thoughts
Looking ahead, the dentists who embrace technology, expand their skill sets, and actively market themselves will be the ones leading the way. If you’re waiting for change to happen, you might find yourself left behind.
