Thinking About a Big-Ticket Purchase for Your Practice? Read This First

Have you ever been tempted to buy an expensive piece of equipment for your practice? Maybe a high tech laser, a hyperbaric chamber or even a fat burning machine (yes, I’ve seen it in a dental practice).

The sales reps make it sound like a no brainer. “It’ll pay for itself in no time!” But before you sign on the dotted line, let’s take a step back.

Is It Really Worth It?

New technology in healthcare is exciting. Some innovations can improve patient care and increase revenue, but others just end up gathering dust in the corner.

Think of it like the latest smartphone upgrade. Every year a new model comes out with slightly better features, but do you really need it if your current phone works just fine? The same goes for expensive practice equipment.

Before you commit, ask yourself these three key questions.

1. Do the Numbers Add Up?

Can your practice afford this without financial strain?

What happens if patient uptake is lower than expected?

Do you have at least six months of savings as a financial cushion?

2. Does It Fit Your Practice Vision?

Does this purchase align with the services you offer?

Are you genuinely excited about it or just chasing potential revenue?

Will it benefit your patients in a meaningful way?

3. Will It Work in Your Practice?

Do you have space for it?

How much training will your staff need?

How much time does it take to use and clean?

Passion is the Key to Success

If you don’t truly believe in the equipment, it’s unlikely to succeed. When you’re excited about something, you naturally talk about it with patients. But if you’re not passionate, your patients and staff will pick up on that, and the machine will sit unused.

Your Team Matters

Your team plays a huge role in making any new investment a success.

✅ Involve them in the decision-making process
✅ Provide training so they feel confident discussing it with patients
✅ Make sure they are just as excited about it as you are

There’s nothing wrong with investing in new equipment for your practice. Just make sure you’re making the decision for the right reasons.

Do your research, check your financials and think about how it fits into your long term vision.

A great piece of equipment won’t magically grow your practice. But a well thought out strategy, backed by passion and a strong team, just might.

Have you ever made a big purchase for your practice? Was it a success or a regret?
