This week on Winning In Business, Angus Pryor the Practice Growth Specialist will be sharing with you part 1 of reasons why your business might be crap.
All right, I’ve been a bit provocative today but quite deliberately ’cause this is something I feel pretty strongly about. On occasions, I hear people complaining about their business is not going as well as it could and I get it. Being in business can be tough. But if your business is crap, well, frankly, I think I know why. I mean, just to set the scene before I give you some answers, I have had the great pleasure of doing more than 10,000 hours of consulting with dentists and other businesses all over Australia for the past six years.
And you start to see themes when you’re dealing with a lot of people. So the first reason why your business might be crap, what do you really want? Are you super clear on what you want from your business? Sometimes what I find is that people are in a kind of a hope. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could get a certain outcome? But do you really, really, really want it? And what do you want?
Let’s be clear, I don’t care what you define success as. That’s up to you but define it and then go after it. You get what you go for. The second thing I wanted to comment on and my goodness, I could spend a lot of time talking about this one based on personal experience is success leaves clues and it’s something that I’m always interested in meeting successful people ’cause I want to understand.
I want to understand why it is that people are successful and there’s an expression that says how you do one thing is how you do everything. And I see this sort of thing quite often. For example, in my business, just for our clients, we run free training courses once a quarter. I get in speakers from Australia and around the world. And here’s the irony. The practices that are doing well, they’re the ones that turn up. The practices that are not doing well, they’re the ones that aren’t turning up and I could give you many similar examples.
And I would say the fact is the people who don’t really need to be doing it, they’re turning up and guess what? They’re successful because they do that sort of thing and the people who are not successful, it’s because they don’t show up. So success leaves clues. What is that you’re doing that is permeating not just one part of your life but your whole life and contributing to whether you’re being successful with what you want or whether you’ve got a business that’s crap.
The last point that I wanted to mention and again, I see this through my dealings with clients is around taking action. I mean, the truth is, every business has got stuff that we don’t like to do. There are many things, like to be really honest with you, I don’t like getting on the phone and talking to people but if I’m really clear about what I want and I know that success leaves clues, then I take action.
And look, this video’s not about me and what I’m doing. I just want to make the observation that from the consulting clients that I work with and the ones that have great success, I’ve got a few of them that have got businesses that are really growing quite fast. We’ve got one on our website, 30% growth in 12 months for a mature business. And the reason is because they take action.
Whereas I deal with other people who would be nice, it would be great if I could get this outcome but they can’t take action and so what they do in one part of their life permeates every part of their life and they end up with a business that’s arguably crap instead of it being great.
I hope that’s helpful for you. If you go well, taking action’s all well and good, Angus but I don’t know where I should be taking action, then by all means, get in touch. AngusPryor.com. Set up a time, it’s a free appointment, I’m not going to hound you or anything but I’m happy to talk through what it’s going to take to get you from there to a business that’s crap to get one that’s successful.
